A Merchant Category Code (MCC) is a four-digit code that classifies businesses based on goods or services sold and informs issuers and payment processors on how to handle transactions. Settings MCC limitations on a virtual card allows finance departments to mitigate risks and control spending of cardholders.Â
Mesh allows strong users (e.g., those with a Mesh Admin profile) set MCC limitations on General Purpose cards when generating or approving them.Â
No MCC limitations is the default.Â
To configure MCC limitations, follow these steps:
1. Generate a card.
2. Navigate to the Card Limitations section.
3. Add a 'Spending limit', 'Period' and 'Currency'.
4. Select the logic—either 'Allowed' or 'Restricted' categories.
- Allowed categories: Transactions with merchants/vendors using the specified MCC will be approved, while all others will be declined.
- Restricted categories: Transactions with merchants/vendors using the specified MCC will be declined, while purchases from merchants/vendors with other MCCs will be allowed.
5. Choose one or more MCC categories.
6. Complete the rest of the details on the General Purpose request form and click 'Submit' to send the card to the approval flow.
7. Each card on the Mesh platform undergoes an approval process per your company's policy. When a card is approved, its restricted MCC groups are presented in the 'Card limitations' section.Â
Â
Examples:
a. The following selection means that payments to vendors using the Computers & IT Equipment code (or MCC # 5045) are allowed, and payments to vendors using another MCC will be declined. Â
b. The following selection restricts payments to vendors using the Business Services-Marketing & Advertising code (or MCC # 7311). In simple terms, users can purchase items from any vendor that does not use the mentioned MCC.
